Mad Cool Festival es uno de los eventos más multitudinarios del panorama nacional. Se celebra en Madrid desde el año 2016 y en él convergen música de todo tipo, fundamentalmente rock, pop, indie, electrónica, además de posicionarse como un importante evento turístico para la ciudad.
Se suele celebrar habitualmente en los primeros días de julio, más concretamente en la segunda semana y el último año tuvo una duración de cuatro días. Los dos primeros años tuvo lugar en el recinto de la Caja Mágica, espacio habitualmente utilizado para la celebración del Open de tenis Mutua Madrid Open. Desde 2018, el festival se ha estado celebrando en el recinto Valdebebas, espacio unido a Ifema, la Feria de Madrid. Sin embargo, éstos han decidido edificar nuevas instalaciones en el recinto por lo que actualmente Mad Cool Festival se encuentra colaborando con el Ayuntamiento de Madrid para encontrar un nuevo espacio para su edición de 2021.
El festival rápidamente se ha convertido en un referente del panorama cultural y musical de la capital gracias a la gran inversión realizada por el festival, que ha permitido traer a algunos de los artistas internacionales más destacados de la historia, como son Neil Young, Arctic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, Iggy Pop, Green Day o The Cure.
En 2017, durante la espera para el show de Green Day, tuvo lugar el trágico accidente de Pedro Aunión, un acróbata que se encontraba realizando una exhibición aérea y que se precipitó al vacío, falleciendo escasos minutos después. El concierto del grupo americano no fue cancelado entre gran polémica, emitiendo un extenso comunicado al día siguiente el festival en el que afirmaron que siguieron las indicaciones de las autoridades, que aconsejaron mantener el evento para no provocar una salida en masa descontrolada.
En 2018, su primer año en el recinto Valdebebas, el festival llegó a tener 80.000 espectadores por día, las cifras más altas de su historia y que no se han vuelto a producir. En las siguientes ediciones, el festival ha abogado por reducir el aforo para ofrecer una mayor comodidad y libertad de movimientos a los asistentes.
Las ediciones de 2020 y 2021 fueron canceladas debido a la crisis sanitaria del coronavirus. Se espera el gran regreso del festival para 2022.
Un año 2022 que también estará marcado por la apertura del festival en ubicaciones y fechas con Andalucía BIG Festival (Festival celebrado en Málaga, Andalucía) y Mad Cool Sunset que se celebrará el 10 de septiembre en el espacio Mad Cool.
